August 9th - Full Moon Soaking

August 9th - Full Moon Soaking

Full Moon in Aquarius - Sturgeon Moon(Farmer's Almanac) - Corn Moon (Algonquin, Ojibwe) - Harvest Moon (Chinese) - Grain Moon or Dispute Moon (Celtic)

We have been thinking and talking a lot recently in the shop about how we root our practice into place. This feels especially poignant as we enter harvest season. What is coming in to harvest in this moment, in this place of Taos, NM is not the same as it is in the UK, in other parts of the world, or even in other parts of the United States. And certainly the oncoming harvest is completely different from the stirring of spring happening in the southern hemisphere.

Here, in this place, in this moment, we are not harvesting grain or corn. For our climate, we still have at least another month for those staple crops to begin to come in. The dry beans and winter squash that join their sister corn in the field may be even later. And while some green chile is starting to make an appearance, as locals we know it won't have any spice until the monsoons stop and the peppers can bake in the late summer heat.

Instead, our farmer's market is full of young onions, potatoes, and garlic (there's even a garlic festival in the area today). The tables are starting to overflow with early season beets and carrots, tomatoes, and summer squash. And the stone fruits... cherries and apricots, a little less abundant this year due to some early frosts, are making their showing for as long as they can. We are solidly in early summer bounty full of tender, juicy, soft foods that we gorge ourselves on in the moment, and fill our jars and freezers with to help brighten up the dark winter.

The Ritual

For this full moon, we are going to bask in the juicy abundance of this moment in this place. We'll do a little moon bathing (even though the moon will still be below the horizon when we gather). We'll make a container, call the moonlight in, bask in it, and ask for any wisdom or messages that Grandmother moon has for us, or things she wants to ask of us.

The human world around us is dissolving in so many ways. So we turn back to our relationship with the natural world.

With love and blessings,

Crone & Crow
