EIRE - The Celtic Collection - SAINT BRIGID Saint Brigid of Kildare (Irish: Naomh Bhride) (451 - 525 AD) is one of the patron saints of Ireland along with St. Patrick and St. Columba and one of the major deities of the Celts. She is also known as the goddess of the Brigantes in northern England and represented the sister or virgin aspect of the Great Goddess. The root word of her name means "bright" or "exalted" and is associated with the power of fire and the feast of Imbolc celebrated on Feb 1st. Her totem animal is a magical cow. Prayers are often offered to her enable successful childbirth and she was said to be the midwife that delivered the baby Jesus in the stable of Bethlehem.
