August 1st: Lughnasadh Potluck Feast and Blessing

August 1st: Lughnasadh Potluck Feast and Blessing

The farmer's market here in Taos is suddenly overflowing this week with the arrival of all the summer produce we've been waiting for. The piles of greens and radishes are rapidly making way for tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant; even corn and green chile have appeared(which is unusually early). The beginning of harvest season is viscerally upon us here in Northern New Mexico.

Lughnasadh (Lughnasa or Lúnasa) is a Celtic Gaelic festival celebrating the beginning of the harvest season with markets & feasting. Historically, it would have been observed throughout Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man; in Wales it would be called Gwŷl Awst.

It’s traditionally celebrated on August 1 - a cross-quarter day halfway between the summer solstice and the autumn equinox. (During the colonization of Celtic homelands, as the Catholic Church began appropriating traditional Celtic holy days into its calendar, they renamed it as “Lammas.”)

At Crone & Crow, we’ll be celebrating this first harvest of Northern New Mexican food by hosting a potluck feast & blessing. We encourage you to join us and share this celebration with our growing community of witches, pagans, and folk practitioners.

With love and blessings,

Crone & Crow
