January 31st - Imbolc Feast and Blessing
Share
Taos has been cozied up under a blanket of snow this weekend. Grateful for the much needed moisture and keeping in our thoughts much of the rest of the country that is experiencing this winter storm more intensely than we are.
Imbolc, the cross quarter holiday between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, is nearly upon us. One of the stories told about this day is about the Cailleach. She is the winter crone who walks the land, pulling her cloak of snow and cold down over the world. Imbolc is the day she goes out to restock her dwindling pile of firewood that has kept her warm over the winter. If it is a nice day, she can collect lots more wood to keep her warm and she will keep winter in the land longer. But if the day is too stormy for her to find enough wood, the Cailleach will have to end winter and cede the land to Brigid sooner that year, letting spring come early.
Imagine, demoting the bringer of winter storms to a groundhog...
In a winter that has been terrifyingly dry for Taos, we find ourselves hoping that the Imbolc weather is fine and the Cailleach will bring us a few more good snows before she releases the land.
In practice and ritual, Imbolc is often about the first tiny hints of new life, new purpose for the year, and honoring the returning of the light. Set an intention, plant a seed, and light a candle to honor Brigid and the stirrings of new light and new energy in the world. Even in the darkest of times, the fires within each of us still burn. Honor those lights, and come celebrate Imbolc with us.
