September 20th - Autumn Equinox and Dark Moon Blessing

Autumn Equinox - day of equal dark and light - harvest festival

Some modern witchcraft groups have taken to calling this day Mabon. Here at Crone & Crow we choose not to, to honor what we have learned from current welsh practitioners about where the word comes from. It's an incredibly informative podcast, which we delightfully recommend for these grey, rainy days. But the tl;dr is that Mabon is a Welsh deity and not one we currently work with or celebrate on the equinox, so we leave his name to others who do.

Whatever name you use, for many places in the northern hemisphere, this is the time when the days are starting to get noticeably shorter and the wheel starts to turn clearly towards more dark and more cool.

Here in Taos, we are definitely feeling the approaching fall. Our less regular summer monsoons seem to be spilling over into cooler, more fall and winter like rain. The mountains that help hold our town got their first snow from the storms that moved through this weekend. And there is an undeniable crisp in the morning air. We are solidly in "bring all the layers" season here in New Mexico.

The equinox this year is very close to the new moon, which is also the second eclipse (partial solar eclipse) in this eclipse season. With everything going on in the world and the heavens, we are going to keep it chill this month with a combined feast and blessing for both the equinox and new moon.

And of course, our favorite way to celebrate any of the holidays is with food! Bring yourself, a dish to share if you can, and space in your belly so we can celebrate the abundance of the Autumn Equinox and our growing community!

With love,
Crone & Crow
